The Mining Industry Dialogue 2024 inspires bold leadership in Botswana's mining sector
The Mining Industry Dialogue 2024 concluded on a high note, bringing together key stakeholders in the mining sector to reflect, strategise, and chart a brighter future for Botswana. The event underscored the urgent need for collaboration in addressing challenges, seizing emerging opportunities, and building a resilient mining industry that remains pivotal to Botswana’s economic transformation.
A highlight of the gathering was the presentation of The Future of Mining Summit post-event report by the Chief Executive Officer of Morupule Coal Mine, Mr. Edwin Elias, to the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo.
In her address, Hon. Bogolo Kenewendo highlighted the importance of forging stronger linkages between mining and other industries, advancing value addition, and accelerating sustainability efforts. She stressed that meeting government expectations was just the starting point, urging the sector to align with the demands of investors and consumers for responsible corporate leadership.
“It’s not just about meeting government expectations; it’s about aligning with the demands of investors and consumers for responsible corporate leadership,” she stated. She further challenged the audience with thought-provoking questions:
“How do we convert renewable energy certificates into tangible gains? How do we translate carbon credit certificates into actionable outcomes? How do we help you achieve net-zero targets—whether by 2050 or even 2030 for some of you? How do we ensure you meet your ESG goals to gain favour in the capital markets, secure funding, and drive development here in Botswana? This is what we aim for: increased productivity and the creation of more dream chasers.”
The Vice President and Minister of Finance, Mr. Ndaba Gaolathe, delivered a compelling keynote address, addressing the sector’s challenges—from volatile commodity prices to escalating energy costs—while maintaining a tone of optimism.
“I am inspired, reassured, and even more confident that the real answers lie with you—the people on the ground, the builders. Our role as Government is to remove the barriers that hinder your ability to drive the growth and transformation needed to build this country,” he said. Mr Gaolathe urged the audience to reimagine the future of Botswana’s mining industry, asserting, “The pen is in our hands to craft a new story.” He called for bold leadership to propel Botswana’s progress, particularly in advancing the mining sector.
As the event drew to a close, Mr. Elias expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Vice President and Minister of Finance Mr. Ndaba Gaolathe, the Minister of Minerals and Energy Honourable Bogolo Kenewendo, and the mining industry captains in attendance. He noted that their presence underscored the sector’s critical role in shaping Botswana’s economy and future.
“Tonight has been truly inspiring. The quality of conversations and the passion shared demonstrate how much we can achieve together,” Mr. Elias remarked. He also commended the founders of The Projects Magazine, organisers of The Future of Mining Summit, for their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts in keeping the mining industry connected and informed.
