MCM at 50, 50 years of energizing the nation, Your partner of choice in the Global Coal transition
On July 31st 1973, what was known as Morupule Colliery then, produced it’s first production of coal. Fifty (50) years later, in the year 2023, now Morupule Coal Mine, the company reflects back on it’s journey as a key contributor to Botswana’s economy and mainstay producer of Coal in the region, internationally and a symbol of prosperity for the local communities. The company has gone from being an Anglo American site, to being wholly owned by Debswana Diamond Company and currently, MCM’s largest shareholder is the Government of the Republic of Botswana under the Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB).
From Seam to Value, Morupule Coal Mine has been delivering a world class product offering to its customers since 1973. The company has proved itself to be an industry leader in supplying coal in the country for power generation amongst others and celebrates; “50 years of energising the nation”, as its mantra of this landmark milestone. The MCM board, management, staff and other key stakeholders wish to mark this milestone with an array of activities and a grand celebration slated for September 2023. “The approach for celebrating MCM50 is to tell the story of MCM from 1973, to now, and give a glimpse of the future by intertwining our Corporate Strategy #1-3-27”, this was said by the company’s CEO Mr. Edwin Elias when unveiling the MCM50 logo to employees recently at the MCM administration block lawns in Palapye. Mr. Elias expressed his delight and privilege to be at the helm of leadership of this organization at a time where such a momentous ocassion is being recognized.
The MCM50 logo was designed in-house and employees were availed three options to choose from as what would be the brand identifier for all things MCM50. Union representative Mr. Ofentse Lemponye who sits in the MCM50 organising committee closed the unveiling session on a cold Monday morning by appreciating all employees for taking part to have a voice in shaping the commemoration of MCM50 through this exercise. “I hope that we would be open enough to contribute to the committee whatever inputs we have as this year will go down history not only for us, but for the country as well”, closed Lemponye.
The role MCM has played and continues to play in bettering our country is significant and should be recognized. Who we want to be beyond the borders of Botswana coupled with our stakeholders’ collective efforts have sustained this business to be where it is today. We are at a point of reflection, refocusing and dreaming of who we want to be in a rapidly changing business environment which has inspired our company’s vision to be a partner of choice in the global coal transition.
