Motheo Copper Mine marks 5 million LTI-Free hours and launches Zero First Aid Incidents Campaign

Morupule Coal Mine had the honour of attending a significant safety milestone celebration hosted by Sandfire and AMS at Motheo Copper Mine, recognising:

•The achievement of 5 million Lost Time Injury-Free (LTI) hours

•The official launch of the Zero First Aid Incidents Campaign

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Morupule Coal Mine, Mr. Nelson Nareetsile, Head of Beneficiation, commended the Motheo team, Sandfire, AMS, and all supporting partners for reaching this remarkable milestone. He emphasised that this is not merely a statistic, it represents thousands of safe actions taken over time, a deeply embedded safety culture, and a workforce that prioritises the well-being of every individual on site.

Mr. Nareetsile further noted that as a fellow operator in Botswana’s mining industry, Morupule Coal Mine shares in this celebration not only as a peer but as a committed stakeholder. At Morupule, we also uphold safety and health, sustainability, and people-focused leadership as core values making it essential that we support and learn from one another’s achievements in creating safer, more resilient workplaces.

What made this occasion even more powerful was the launch of the Zero First Aid Incidents Campaign, a forward-looking initiative that sets the tone for continued excellence.

AMS Project Manager, Mr. Caster Mothibedi reminded the team of the importance of reflecting on how the 5 million LTI-free hours were achieved, using that insight to build toward the new target of 8 million. It was a call to sustain momentum and push forward with purpose.

Mr. Marang Molatlhegi, HSE Manager, spoke with conviction on the principle that “𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙘𝙪𝙩𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙩𝙮”. He spoke on the R&R Campaign, Recall & Reflect, Regroup, and Reset as a powerful mindset tool to refresh focus and recommit to personal and collective safety responsibility.

The campaign also emphasised first aid awareness and empowerment, with objectives including:

-Promoting the importance of first aid

-Encouraging employee accountability and responsibility

-Reinforcing full compliance with safety regulations

To close the day, attendees participated in a guided tour of the pit, offering an opportunity to appreciate the infrastructure, systems, and people that have made these achievements possible.

Congratulations to the Motheo Copper Mine team, Sandfire, AMS, and all partners involved. Your dedication to safety and operational excellence is an inspiration to the industry and a reminder that when we work together with shared values, we move the whole sector forward.
