Morupule Coal Mine celebrates excellence
Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) recently hosted its prestigious 2024 Long Service and Excellence Awards ceremony, a night dedicated to celebrating the unwavering dedication, resilience, and achievements of its workforce. The event brought together local leadership, including the Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Honourable Onneetse Ramogapi, MCM’s board members, and other distinguished guests.
The evening’s keynote address was delivered by Mr. Matome Tsholetsa Malema, CEO of Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB), who highlighted the significance of the event as a celebration of excellence, unity, and commitment to progress. In his speech, he recognised the remarkable contributions of the 68 long-service award recipients, two retirees, and those who demonstrated exceptional leadership and performance. He emphasised that such dedication was the foundation upon which Morupule Coal Mine continues to thrive, reflecting the values that have defined the organisation for over 51 years.
Mr. Malema underscored how MCM has become a pillar of Botswana’s economy and a symbol of excellence within the mining industry, praising the workforce’s resilience, commitment, and determination in driving the success of the company. He also recognised how long-service employees, retirees, and excellence award recipients have shaped MCM into a leader in the sector, contributing not just to the organization’s growth but also to Botswana’s broader socio-economic development.
The event was officially opened by MCM’s CEO, Mr. Edwin Elias, who extended a warm welcome to the attendees. In his address, he stressed the importance of recognising the outstanding efforts of the employees, whose commitment has been pivotal in MCM's transformation and ambitious vision for the future. He noted that the company’s growth is not solely based on financial success but on its core values of consistency, perseverance, and innovation—qualities that are embodied by the long-service recipients and excellence award winners.
Dr. Kgomotso Jongman also delivered a motivational talk, inspiring the recipients to continue striving for excellence and innovation. The evening concluded with the closing remarks from Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) Chairman, Ontlametse Koketso, who encouraged all employees to keep pushing towards new milestones, working together, and contributing to the company’s legacy of success.
