MR. JOHANNES

MR. JOHANNES MOTSHEGARE

Board Chairperson

Mr. Johannes Motshegare has been appointed as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Morupule Coal Mine. Mr. Motshegare brings institutional knowledge of MCM's strategic direction, governance structures and shareholder priorities. His elevation to Chairperson reflects confidence in his leadership judgment and experience and ensures continuity at Board level during a period of purposeful transition.

Johannes Motshegare is a highly accomplished Human Resources (HR) leader with over 25 years of extensive experience spanning government, parastatals, and the private sector. Throughout his distinguished career, he has consistently demonstrated the ability to drive impactful HR strategies, spearhead large-scale organisational transformations and implement effective talent management initiatives for some of Botswana’s most prominent organisations.

 Currently, he serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Allaboard Botswana Pty Ltd (Partnership with International Talent Management Academy - ITMA). He is also Director at Allaboard Africa, a leading Pan-African consulting partner in strategy development, business enablement, institutional transformation and talent management.

 Johannes Motshegare holds a wide range of professional qualifications that underpin his expertise in human resources and organisational development. He is a Certified Talent Practitioner (CTP™) and a Chartered Organisational Development Practitioner (CODP™). He completed his Program for Management Development (PMD) at the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town, RSA, and pursued further executive education in HR Strategy for Transforming Organisations at the prestigious London Business School. Academically, Mr. Motshegare holds a Master’s degree in Manpower Planning from the University of Westminster, London, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of Botswana. Additionally, he earned a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Human Resource Development from Vaal University of Technology in South Africa. As a certified trainer in CTP, CODP, and 3D Mentorship, he is also qualified in the Development Dimensions International (DDI) Facilitation Course, demonstrating his extensive commitment to professional development and organisational excellence.

 

MS. MBOKO

MS. MBOKO MODIE

Board Director

Mboko Onkarabile Modie is a distinguished business executive and transformational leader with expertise in Corporate Governance, Risk Management, Project Management, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Project Delivery. She holds a Master of Science in Project Management from the University of Sunderland and a Bachelor of Business Information Systems from the University of Botswana. Additionally, she has completed the prestigious Global Executive Development Programme at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, enhancing her leadership capabilities.

Ms. Mboko has held strategic roles across large parastatal organisations and financial institutions, where she has driven key strategic initiatives. At First National Bank Botswana (FNBB), she led the creation of the Product Management Committee, implementing a comprehensive risk management framework for product lifecycle management. Her work ensured regulatory compliance and introduced best practices in governance, positioning FNBB for the sustained success in the marketplace.

In her current position as Chief Executive Assistant to the Commissioner General of BURS, Ms. Mboko provides strategic leadership and oversees major initiatives aimed at organisational transformation. She has led projects in organisational realignment, system audits, and customer-centric transformations, driving operational improvements and enhanced service delivery. Her previous role as General Manager of Human Resource Information Management and Modernisation at BURS showcases her expertise in HR systems and modernisation.

Throughout her career, Ms. Mboko has demonstrated a unique blend of strategic vision, ethical integrity, and a passion for fostering innovation. Her leadership style emphasises continuous improvement, change management, and diversity and inclusion, making her a trusted advisor and forward-thinking leader. Her extensive experience and commitment to excellence make her an invaluable asset to the Morupule Coal Mine Board and any organisation she serves.

 

MR. KENALEMANG

MR. KENALEMANG CHARLES

Board Director

Mr. Kenalemang Charles is a seasoned mining engineer and senior government official with extensive progressive leadership experience within Botswana's Department of Mines, Ministry of Minerals and Energy. He currently serves as Director of the Department of Mines, a position he assumed in February 2026, making him one of the most senior mining regulatory officials in Botswana. In this role, Mr. Charles coordinates departmental performance, administers mineral concession processes, oversees compliance with applicable mining legislation including safety, health and environment, and also provides strategic leadership on national mineral revenue and policy matters.

Mr. Charles's public service career encompasses roles spanning from a learner mine official to becoming Director of Mines. He also completed several secondments including Anglo American Greenside Colliery in South Africa, deepening his understanding of large-scale private sector coal mining operations. His technical expertise spans mine design and planning, feasibility studies, site modelling, safety management, environmental compliance and resource optimisation.

Mr. Charles holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining and Quarry Engineering from the University of Leeds and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Parklane College. He also holds an Elementary Mine Surveying Certificate from the Chamber of Mines South Africa. He brings to the MCM Board a unique combination of regulatory authority, operational mining expertise and national policy experience, of direct strategic value to MCM as it navigates an evolving regulatory environment.

 

MR. LAZARUS

MR. LAZARUS MOTLHABANE

Board Director

Mr. Lazarus Motlhabane is a results-driven Information Technology Executive with 19 years of experience leading enterprise-wide digital transformations, cloud migrations and cybersecurity initiatives across Botswana's public sector. He currently serves as Head of Information Technology at the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA), where he has spearheaded IT modernisation, ERP implementations and strategic stakeholder engagements, achieving operational efficiency improvements of approximately 30% and infrastructure cost reductions of 24%. A trusted advisor to C-suite executives and boards, Mr. Motlhabane brings deep expertise in IT governance frameworks, including COBIT and ITIL, ISO 27001 compliance, and AI-driven automation.

Prior to BQA, Mr. Motlhabane served as Principal Specialist for IT Services at the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA), providing oversight of major national infrastructure programmes including the Passport and Border Control System, the Safer City Project and the Integrated Patient Management System. Earlier roles at Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTCL) and the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs included management of a P32 million IT consolidation project spanning local authorities nationwide.

Mr. Motlhabane holds a Master of Science in Strategic Management from the University of Derby, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Botswana. He also holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Procurement and is a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). He brings to the MCM Board a technology and governance perspective directly relevant to the Mine’s ongoing digital transformation journey.

 

MR. MICHAEL

MR. MICHAEL MAFA

Board Director

Mr. Michael Mafa is a distinguished Facilities Management professional with over 30 years of industry experience and a recognised thought leader in sustainability and built-environment governance. He holds an MSc in Engineering Management and is credentialed under the SFP and CIWFM frameworks. As President of the Botswana Facilities Management Association (BOFMA) and an ERB-registered Professional Engineering Technologist, Mr. Mafa has been instrumental in shaping the facilities management landscape in Botswana and across the Southern African region.

Mr. Mafa serves as a Board Director of the IFMA Sustainability Community (ISC) and as a Director of the Eric Teicholz Scholarship Evaluation Committee. He is regularly engaged in expert panels that influence FM standards and practices internationally and contributes to Botswana's FM Standards Review Committee, supporting national policy development and industry growth. His professional footprint extends to prestigious institutions including the United Nations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Embassy (VOA), Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom, and the Bank of Botswana.

Mr. Mafa brings to the MCM Board expertise in sustainable asset management, infrastructure governance and organisational sustainability, capabilities of increasing relevance as MCM advances its ESG Framework and Decarbonisation Strategy toward Net Zero by 2050.

 

MS. ORATILE P.

MS. ORATILE P. MPUCHANE

Board Director

Ms. Oratile Patience Mpuchane is an accomplished attorney with extensive experience in corporate and commercial law, regulatory compliance, governance and litigation. Her career includes roles such as an Attorney at Briscoe Attorneys, advising clients across private, public and commercial sectors on a wide range of legal and transactional matters. She led large portfolios for a number of local banking institutions in corporate and civil litigation disputes. She is also a qualified Conveyancer and Notary Public, with expertise in property transfers, trust drafting and document authentication for both domestic and international purposes.

Ms. Mpuchane also served as an Attorney at Peo Legal from 2021 to 2023, where she developed a comprehensive corporate and commercial practice encompassing company formation, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, regulatory compliance and labour law. Her compliance portfolio included conducting AML audits, developing compliance frameworks, and engaging with regulatory bodies including NBFIRA, the Bank of Botswana and the Competition and Consumer Authority. She has represented parastatals including Botswana Postal Services before the Industrial Court.

Ms. Mpuchane holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Botswana, a Certificate of Proficiency from the Institute of Insurance of South Africa, and a Compliance Management qualification from the University of Cape Town. She brings to the MCM Board a rigorous legal and compliance perspective, particularly relevant to MCM's governance obligations, regulatory engagements and risk management frameworks under King IV principles.

 

The Board meets at least three times a year. The Board has three Committees being;
